Rugosa rose is moderately shade tolerant and grows to average heights of 4 to 6 feet.  It suckers and can often spread.  It prefers well-drained soils.  Growth rate is moderate and wildlife value is good.  It is an extremely hardy shrub with very attractive pink to white flowers.  The large red fruit (rosehips)  are very high in vitamin C and can be used in teas and wine.  It is less susceptible to deer browse than many shrubs.
