Red Osier Dogwood
Cornus stolonifera

Red Osier Dogwood is shade tolerant.  It suckers, so is will often spread.  It grows to an average height of 6 to 10 feet.  It prefers poorly-drained to moderately well-drained soil.  It has very good wildlife value, and grows moderately.  The bark is a vibrant red, and is particularly striking in the winter.  It is an important wildlife shrub (largely for deer), and is very useful in streambank/lakeshore stabilization.  It is highly susceptible to deer browse, and protective measures should be taken in areas of high deer population.
