Chokecherry
Prunus virginiana

Chokecherry is moderately tolerant of shade.  It lives about 30 to 40 years and grows to a height of 20 to 30 feet.  It prefers medium to  heavy textured, well drained soils.  It has very good to excellent wildlife value, and grows moderately.  Chokecherry has pretty white flowers and fruit that is attractive to birds and can be used for jellies, jams, syrup and wine.  It suckers freely, so will often spread.  It is less susceptible to deer browse than many shrubs.
