Black Chokeberry
Aronia melanocarpa
Black Chokeberry is moderately shade tolerant, and grows to average heights of 3 to 6 feet. It suckers freely, so will often spread. It will grow in poorly-drained to moist well-drained soils. It is alkaline tolerant. Growth rate is moderate, and wildlife value is good. It produces abundant black fruit that is commercially grown in Europe. It is less susceptible to deer browse than many shrubs. It prefers wet sites. Fall color is attractive.
