Tamarack (Larch)
Larix laricina

Tamarack is intolerant of shade, lives about 100 to 200 years and grows to a height of 50 to 75 feet.  It prefers sandy to medium texture, well drained to poorly drained soil.  It has fair to good wildlife value, and grows fast.   Tamarack loses its foliage in the fall and has a golden yellow fall color.  It is tolerant of poorly drained soils.  It is less susceptible to deer browse than many conifers.
