Jack Pine Jack Pine is shade intolerant. It requires full sun. Jack pine can live over 100 years, but maximum timber value is reached at age between 45 and 60 years. Mature Jack Pine reaches heights of 35 to 80 feet. It prefers sandy, well drained soil. It has fair to good wildlife value, and grows moderately fast to fast. Jack Pine is drought tolerant, and is a good timber tree. Young Jack pine is very susceptible to deer browse, and protective measures should be taken in areas of high deer population. Much of the local jack pine has been infested with the Jack Pine Budworm, which is causing high rates of mortality and creating fire hazards.
