Black Walnut
Juglans nigra

Black Walnut is shade intolerant.  It lives over 150 years and grows to a height of 60 to 90 feet.  It prefers moist to well-drained soil, and grows moderately fast.  It provides good wildlife value.  The roots secrete juglone, a substance that is toxic to most conifers and certain flower and vegetables within the dripline.  Wood from the Black Walnut is highly prized.  It is native to Southern Minnesota.  It has a deep tap root & root system.
