Black Walnut Black Walnut is shade intolerant. It lives over 150 years and grows to a height of 60 to 90 feet. It prefers moist to well-drained soil, and grows moderately fast. It provides good wildlife value. The roots secrete juglone, a substance that is toxic to most conifers and certain flower and vegetables within the dripline.
