Black Spruce Black Spruce is shade tolerant. It lives over 250 years. It reaches heights of 30 to 50 feet. It prefers poorly drained to moderately well drained soil. It has good to very good wildlife value, and grows slow to moderately fast. It is the shortest needled spruce, is native to bogs, and tolerates poor drainage. It is less susceptible to deer browse than many conifers. By special request to the State Forest Tree Nursery, Beltrami SWCD now has Black Spruce transplants available instead of the usual seedlings. These trees are grown three years in a seed bed and one year in a transplant bed. They have very well-established root systems and sturdy stem caliper. Short of balled-burlaped, these are the largest-size black spruce available anywhere. Click on thumbnail below for larger image. |
