Balsam Fir
Abies balsamea

Balsam Fir is very shade tolerant.  It lives an average of 100 years.  It reaches heights of 40 to 60 feet.  It prefers medium texture, well drained to poorly drained soil.  It has good to very good wildlife value, and grows moderately fast.   Balsam Fir is the most shade tolerant conifer, and prefers a cool moist atmosphere.   It is highly susceptible to deer browse, and protective measures should be taken in areas of high deer population.
